Italian Diction Coach | Founder & CEO, Bel Canto Opera Academy

About Stefano
Born in Rome, Italy, Stefano Baldasseroni is an internationally recognized Italian diction coach whose work has taken him to some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, conservatories, and music institutions.
He serves as an Italian diction coach at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and has been a member of the faculties of The Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Georg Solti Accademia in Italy.
Throughout his career, Baldasseroni has also worked with numerous distinguished institutions, including Yale University, Rice University, the Manhattan School of Music, Bard College, Houston Grand Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Santa Fe Opera, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing, and the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea. His international teaching activities have also included engagements at the Fondazione Mascarade in Florence.
His approach to Italian diction goes beyond pronunciation, emphasizing the intimate relationship between language, musical phrasing, and dramatic expression. Drawing on his deep knowledge of Italian language and culture, he helps singers achieve linguistic authenticity while developing greater freedom and expressiveness in their performances.
Before dedicating his career to opera, Baldasseroni enjoyed an international career as a professional drummer, touring extensively and performing for five years with former members of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. His background as an instrumentalist continues to inform his distinctive approach to language coaching, with particular emphasis on rhythm, phrasing, and the natural connection between text and music.
In 2021, Baldasseroni founded the Nashville Bel Canto Foundation, now known as the Bel Canto Opera Academy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bridging the gap between academic training and professional careers for emerging opera singers. As Founder and Executive Director, he has developed tuition-free training opportunities that bring young artists together with distinguished professionals for intensive coaching, masterclasses, staged performances, and career development.
Central to his vision is the belief that talented young singers should have access to exceptional professional training regardless of their financial circumstances. Through the Academy, he strives to create an environment that reflects the expectations, responsibilities, and rewards of a professional operatic career while encouraging artistic excellence and long-term career sustainability.
Baldasseroni is also the creator of Italian Diction Bites, an educational video series designed to make the nuances of Italian pronunciation and diction accessible to singers worldwide.
